My glass art ranges from practical to abstract reflecting on the dynamics of texture, color, and illusion of movement created with glass. I enjoy watching people look at pieces I have created and ask themselves “how did she do that?”
As a self taught artist, I continue to attend glass art classes, and watercolor classes further elevating my art skills. I also dabble in metal art often incorporating glass and metals to form unique jewelry pieces and outdoor art. I am inspired daily by the beautiful Southern Utah red cliffs, desert colors and flowers and incorporate many of those inspirations into my glass art pieces. Since completing my home studio in Utah, I enjoy teaching beginning and intermediate kiln formed glass classes.
Background--Connie Gates/Owner, Grapevine Glass Art
Living in Utah most of her life, Connie earned several careers including Financial Management at the University of Utah, Economic Development for the State of Utah, and was co-owner of a large commercial photo lab and studio. During the course of her careers while searching for a creative outlet, she discovered the art of kiln formed glass, sometimes referred to as "fused glass". She began her journey with glass art in a class taught at the University of Utah in 1994 and it was at this point she realized working with vibrant glass colors was not only a great stress reliever, but also a passion.
In 2008 Connie moved from Salt Lake City to the beautiful Pacific Northwest near the Columbia River where she lived on a ranch until moving back to Southern Utah in 2018. While living in the NW she was heavily involved in art in her local community and became the President of their local art guild. As President, she was instrumental in obtaining space and opening a cooperative art gallery with 27 participating artists. Her business background proved useful in managing the gallery and performing such business tasks as payroll, tax, and management of 501 c practices. She is currently serving as a member of the Ivins City Arts Commission and is actively assisting in implementing the Ivins City Art Master Plan.
