MAURINE HARRIS

I have enjoyed drawing and other forms of art since I was small. After raising eight children I started taking classes at the Community College in Salt Lake City and some workshops from artists whose work I loved. When my children were at home I painted in acrylics so they would dry quickly and eventually added watercolors. I would spend time painting greeting cards for friends and family as well as portraits, landscapes and still life. I love painting anything that catches my eye whether it be the light, the color, a person’s expression or the feeling a subject invokes. Over the years oil has become my medium of choice. It is much more forgiving and I can change and adapt a painting as I go.

I have developed a love of plein air painting and find that it has helped me see colors, shadows and light much better than in a photograph, although I still need photos at times when I’m not able to be outside. I am always grateful and appreciate those who take time to view my paintings and purchase them for their own homes.

Over the years I have taken classes and workshops from many wonderful artists and have learned from each of them. They include Charles Thomas, Betty Carr, Jill Carver, David Koch, Del Parson, Roland Lee, Susan Gallagher, William Scott Jennings, Joni Falk and others. I am continuing to learn and having settled in St. George, Utah, I have the most beautiful setting to find subjects for plein air paintings. I have a small studio in my home and spend many happy hours creating.
